To Run
The word “paralympic” in the term Paralympic Games means, “parallel” to the Olympic Games. Paralympic values embrace determination, courage, equality and inspiration. This major sporting event occurs every four years in summer and winter directly following the Olympic Games. In the year 2000 the city of Sydney in Australia hosted the Olympic Games and a few weeks later the Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic spirit encourages athletes from around the world to participate and to push the boundaries of human endurance and sporting endeavour.
Historically it is about more than just the sport – it is about taking part. Paralympians will proudly tell you it’s not just about winning or pushing their physical ability to the absolute. It’s about participation; it’s about representing country, representing yourself, and redefining yourself.
These inspiring athletes display many qualities during the games: will and determination, courage through adversity, improvisation, humility, healing and recovery (both physical and mental), tolerance and respect for others, and a sense of pride.
The Paralympians’ stories should educate and encourage all of us to participate, and to aspire to their values in our individual day-to-day lives and in our local communities.
